Historic Aiken’s Response to New Possibilities for Downtown Development: Historic Aiken is encouraged by the direction the city is taking. Historic Newberry Hall and the Johnson/McGhee block are preserved. The city has said it is preparing an RFP for the Hotel Aiken that will encourage preservation developers to come to the table. SRNL could be an exciting addition to downtown, and based on the limited information to date, we anticipate that their building could compliment the aesthetics of that historic block in scale and architectural integrity. However, as additional information is made available, we will be watching to ensure that Aiken’s historic preservation laws and guidelines are followed.
